It’s been a couple of weeks since leaving “the Oughts” behind, and as Congress begins to reassemble in Washington, I think it’s an important time to discuss the current state of the health care legislation.

As Americans across the political spectrum continue to display their general displeasure with the flawed health care bills that passed both the House and the Senate (see the latest CBS poll :36% approve; 54% disapprove), Democratic lawmakers appear to be steadfastly sticking by their puzzling goal of getting an inadequate and unpopular health care bill onto the President’s desk as quickly as possible.

This expediency-at-all-costs attitude is now manifesting in the Democratic leaders’ refusal to come together in a formal Conference Committee to discuss the merging of the bills — the traditional route taken when attempting to consolidate House and Senate bills during any legislation. They have instead chosen to work under a veil of secrecy, holding informal negotiations that exclude both Republican lawmakers and the American people.

Democratic leaders have largely ignored the public outcry to this decision. 

C-SPAN CEO Brian Lamb’s request  to top members of Congress that they open up their negotiations to electronic media coverage had little effect, even though then-candidate Obama himself repeatedly claimed that health care negotiations would be televised on C-SPAN . Mr. Lamb pushed the point that Americans should have access to this “critical stage of reconciliation,” while on January 6, CNN’s Jack Cafferty blasted the Obama administration’s  failure to follow through on their guarantees of transparency in the legislative process, calling Obama’s promises “just another lie that was told in order to get elected.”

While it may seem that the bill is all but on the President’s desk at this point, this is not the case. The process is far from over. As exemplified by this 12 page document  that was prepared by the Tri-Committee House Staff, there are still many key issues to be ironed out between the two different bills.

Though at the moment it appears that the public-option will not survive the proceedings (a great victory for the Coalition to Protect Patients’ Rights  and all Americans), this bill is far from satisfactory, and remains worse than the status-quo. This is mainly due to the fact that:

• The bill is still expected to include Medicare cuts that will adversely affect the medical care seniors citizens receive.
• The bill will spawn an unprecedented expansion of government, saddling federal bureaucracies with the management of new health insurance exchanges.
• The bill will fail to cut health care related costs and will instead result in an increase in our already bloated national debt.
• The bill is going to impede the ability of doctors to provide patients with the care they need.

The Coalition to Protect Patients’ Rights is continuing to give a voice to both health care professionals and their patients around the country who believe that we can do far better than the bill that is currently being hurried off of the Hill.  In fact, I recently participated in an interview on the G. Gordon Liddy Show , an opportunity which gave me a chance to hit on a number of important topics, including why I believe that it’s important to remember that the AMA (which as we know has come out in support of both the House and Senate bills) is not in concert with the views of the majority of American physicians, almost 500,000 physicians through their organizations,  entered into the Congressional Record opposing the current legislation being rushed through Congress.

CPPR is committed to staying engaged and effective in the ongoing debate over health care reform. It is important that we are more involved than ever at this crucial time. Contact your elected representatives to make sure that they know that we do not support what is taking shape behind their closed doors, and that a carefully designed, comprehensive bill that protects patients’ rights is what the American people not only deserve, but need.

I'm appalled. Ican't believe that supposedly educated individuals that profess to represent constituents, can honestly believe that crafting something as important as health care, should be crafted behind closed doors with input by unknown sources and let the information they come up out leaked to the media by persons who can't identify themselves because of the secrecy of the meetings.
They obviously have not read John Adams,where it was crystal clear that the form of government proposed by our founding fathers was designed to remove parties and party loyalty from any bills , writs or taxes that would involve the citizenry.
The political aristocracy may doom us all telling free men what we need, what we want and what  we should get even if we don't want it.
Victor HUgo had an intersting thought in Les Miserable, to paraphrase : Free men, who are constantly subjected to increasing laws cease to be free.
