The Coalition to Protect Patients’ Rights (CPPR) spent the past year advocating for health system reform that places patients in control of their own medical decisions with doctors as their trusted advisors. As physicians we recognize that the battle to shape our nation’s healthcare system did not end with the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. In addition to ensuring that the bill itself is implemented in a patient-centered way, we are also determined to fight on behalf of our patients for meaningful medical liability reforms, a permanent fix for the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula, and limits to the size and scale of cuts to the Medicare program so that seniors can continue to count on the care that they need and deserve.
Ultimately we began with one main goal, namely, to prevent a government takeover of our healthcare system in the form of the public option. Our members can claim success in that singular mission as the public option did not become the law of the land. The synergy created by our unique team of healthcare professionals can and will continue to play a role in shaping healthcare policy in the years to come.
